Add a little bit of spice to a classic side dish with these hot honey brussel sprouts. 2 ingredient hot honey, bacon, and brussel sprouts sautéed together and then topped with parmesan cheese for flavorful side dish that is a guaranteed crowd pleaser!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news… but apparently we have all been wrong our entire lives about brussel sprouts. In fact, they are not called brussel sprouts at all, they are brussels sprouts.
Will that change how I navigate brussel sprouts moving forward? Let’s be honest… probably not.
Anyway, that’s neither here nor there. Let’s chat vegetables, because a lot of people struggle to get enough of them into their diet. While some people struggle with the prep of veggies themselves, others simply can’t find a way to eat them that is enjoyable enough to make a habit.
We’re here to change that!
If you are looking for a vegetable side dish that isn’t a salad and is more exciting than simple roasted vegetables, reach for these hot honey brussel sprouts instead! With sweet, savory, and spicy flavors from delicious ingredients, this recipe is a fresh spin on vegetables that all of your guests will love.
Why you’ll love this recipe:
My hot honey brussel sprouts with bacon are a delectable side dish option that require no roasting or special cooking skills. Here’s why you’ll love this recipe:
Only 6 ingredients- this recipe uses only 6 ingredients but is bursting with flavor. While I kept the ingredients list simple, you are always welcome to add any additional seasonings
Customizable- I give you my easy, 2 ingredient hot honey sauce recipe but you can choose your own spice level!
Want it spicier? Add a dash of sriracha or an extra scoop of red pepper flakes. Want to tone it down? Scale back on the red pepper flakes or omit them all together to make a honey and bacon brussel sprouts dish instead!
Sautéed, not roasted: While I love roasting my vegetables just as much as the next person, sometimes you need to switch up the cooking method to give your veggies a fun new flare. Here, we sauté the brussel sprouts till they are fork tender instead of roasting to crispiness.
Nutritious- Brussel sprouts are loaded with nutrition and contain nutrients like fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin C. I love using shredded brussel sprouts because I think they present beautifully PLUS they’re easier and quicker to cook than using whole or chopped brussel sprouts.
You’re going to love this veggie side dish idea!
Ingredients for brussel sprouts with hot honey:
One of the best parts about this flavorful veggie side dish is that it only calls for 6 ingredients! Here’s what you’ll need:
Shredded brussel sprouts- you can shred these yourself OR buy pre-shredded brussel sprouts from the store for an added level of convenience.
Shallot- with a tiny but mighty flavor, shallots are often used in place of an onion and have a milder flavor of a red onion.
Bacon- We will cook and crisp this up in the pan prior to cooking our brussel sprouts.
Honey- we will use this to make a 2 ingredient hot honey sauce
Red pepper flakes- the other ingredient for our hot honey dip recipe. If you don’t have red pepper flakes, you can use sriracha instead and make a hot honey sriracha dip!
Shredded parmesan cheese- Sprinkled overtop your hot honey brussel sprouts, this is great for garnish, flavor, and to tone down the spice slightly.
Step by Step Process:
If you are feeling intimidated to make these sautéed brussel sprouts, I’m going to show you exactly how to make them so that you can see how easy this side dish is.
Here’s what you need do to:
1) Start by finely dicing your shallot, chopping your bacon, and adding it to a large pot or very large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Stir every 5 to 10 minutes and cook until your bacon is cooked through and has reached a desired level of crispiness, about 20-25 minutes.
LTN Tip: If you want to save time making these Brussels sprouts, you could always oven bake your bacon the day before, allow it to cool, then chop into smaller bacon bit sized pieces. Then, simply sauté your shallot with your Brussels sprouts and add in your cooked bacon to save time.
2) Once your bacon is fully cooked through, add all of your shaved brussel sprouts to your pot and stir to incorporate your bacon and shallot. Sauté your Brussel sprouts, stirring regularly, until they are fork tender which will take an additional 15 to 20 minutes.
3) While your Brussels sprouts are cooking, we are going to make the hot honey. Add your honey and red pepper flakes (add slowly and to taste) to a small sauce pan and warm over medium heat until your honey reaches a simmer, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
4) Once your brussel sprouts are fully cooked, pour in your hot honey and stir until incorporated. At this point, you can leave the hot honey brussel sprouts in the pot you cooked them in and top with parmesan cheese OR transfer to whatever dish you want to serve them out of then top with cheese.
Allow the cheese to melt by covering the pot or placing your serving dish in a 350 degree oven for 5 minutes to 10 minutes until the cheese is melted. Serve these hot honey brussels sprouts warm and enjoy!
Swaps, Substitutions, and Suggestions:
Another aspect of this veggie side dish that I absolutely love is how customizable it is. Here are some swaps, substitutions, or suggestions that I have to make this recipe your own:
Oven roast them: This recipe will give you tender, sautéed brussels sprouts. If you prefer crispy brussel sprouts, you can toss the brussels stouts in the cooked bacon and shallot mixture then place on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes at 425 degrees.
Once your brussel sprouts have reached the level of crispy that you want them at, then drizzle the hot honey over top your cooked brussel sprouts and top with parmesan cheese until it melts. Search warm and enjoy.
Change your heat level: You can fully customize your 2 ingredient hot honey by adding more spice or adding less spice to keep it family friendly
Add other flavors: I kept the seasonings and add ins simple to let the 2 ingredient hot honey be the flavor star. If you want more flavor, add in a scoop of garlic and season with seasonings of your choice.
Top it with a protein: Turn this veggie side dish into a meal by topping it with cooked chicken, sliced steak, or air fryer salmon. You can also mix it with some garlic quinoa or cooked brown rice to add in a carbohydrate.
And more!
Recipe FAQ:
What goes with brussel sprouts?
Brussel sprouts are an easy vegetable to pair with many different dishes and can be prepped in different ways to better match the dinner you are serving them with!
For example, balsamic glazed brussel sprouts may pair better with bruschetta chicken while crispy soy brussel sprouts might pair better with soy salmon nuggets. You can pair these hot honey brussel sprouts with any protein, fish, or even add them to a bowl for a little spice!
Hot to shred brussel sprouts.
Many stores to sell pre-chopped brussel sprouts which are washed and ready to eat. You can also buy whole brussel sprouts, wash and trim, then finely slice them with a knife or even use a mandoline slicer!
Can you eat raw brussel sprouts?
Yes! In fact, one of my absolute favorite ways to make a salad is using raw brussel sprouts. They do add a sharper, more distinct flavor to a recipe, similar to green cabbage, so I tend to blend them with another mixed green to soften the flavors.
What if I don’t have red pepper flakes to make hot honey?
No pepper flakes for the hot honey? No worries! You can use sriracha in its place to make honey sriracha brussel sprouts instead. When I make my hot honey, I tend to swap between red pepper flakes and sriracha for an equally delicious hot honey dip!
