Blended cottage cheese is the perfect solution for people who want to enjoy cottage cheese but simply can’t get past the texture. It’s also the perfect recipe addition, greek yogurt substitute, or base for healthy dips because of its smooth and creamy texture.
In todays blog, we’re talking all about blending cottage cheese: what is it, how to make it, and how to serve it in a way that is enjoyable so that you can start including cottage cheese in your diet, today!
What is blended cottage cheese?
Blended cottage cheese is simply cottage cheese that has been pulsed or blended into a smooth, yogurt like texture. It’s incredibly easy to make at home and maintains all of its nutritional benefits but loses the classic “chunky” texture that cottage cheese is known for… and often not loved for!
People blend cottage cheese for a variety of reasons including:
For a smoother, more desirable texture: This is definitely the primary reason why people prefer cottage cheese blended. While cottage cheese is incredibly nutrient dense, many people simply cannot get it onto their plates because of its chunky and curdy texture.
By blending cottage cheese, you smooth out all of the chunks and give it a creamy texture that many adults and children find more enjoyable!
For easier incorporation into recipes: The creamy texture of blended cottage cheese is much easier to include into recipes like a cottage cheese sauce, dip, or smoothie. With a texture more similar to that of yogurt, blended cottage cheese can enhance both the nutrition and the creaminess of most recipes!
As a nutritious substitute for other ingredients: Blended cottage cheese is commonly used as a substitute for a variety of ingredients in recipes. One popular way to use blended cottage cheese is as a greek yogurt alternative if you want a similar texture result but less tang in your recipe.
You can also use blended cottage cheese as a healthier cream cheese substitute because cottage cheese naturally has a cheesecake like flavor that mimics cream cheese!
How to make blended cottage cheese:
Blending cottage cheese at home is incredibly easy and all you’ll need for a basic recipe is a container of cottage cheese, a blending tool (blender, food processor, or emulsion blender), and possibly a splash of liquid depending on the moisture content of the brand of cottage cheese you are using.
Here’s a step by step instruction to get your cottage cheese blended:
1) Add your container of cottage cheese to a blender, food processor, or emulsion blender. You can also add the exact amount you will need for the recipe you are making if you don’t want to blend the entire container.
If you do choose to blend the entire container of cottage cheese, the blended cottage cheese can be stored in an air tighter container in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days.
2) Blend until smooth, adding a splash of water or milk of choice if necessary to help the cottage cheese start to blend. Some brands of cottage cheese have a larger curd and higher moisture content than other brands of cottage cheese and this helps them blend easier, especially in a blender.
The final consistency should be creamy, smooth, and similar to yogurt.
3) Add in your flavors. While of course you can enjoy plain blended cottage cheese spread on toast or mixed into sauces and smoothies, you can also blend it with a variety of sweet or savory flavors like peanut butter, chocolate, ranch seasoning, and more!
You can stir these flavors in once your cottage cheese is blended or blend it all at once in your blender or food processor.
