In a time where it feels like no one can eat enough protein to meet their ever rising protein goals, I’m often asked about the wide variety of protein powder options on the market. Plant based or whey? Are there any lactose free protein powders? Which protein powder is best?

Hey, I’m Lauren! I’m a registered dietitian helping you sift through the ever evolving nutrition hacks, product recommendations, and health trends to find approaches and products that work best for you.

Whey protein powders continue to be a go to pre-workout or recovery option for athletes and one brand that has recently been gaining a lot of interest is Seeq, a clear whey isolate protein. Today we are going to do a deep dive into Seeq protein and find out if it could be a good product for you.

Seeq Protein Review

What is Seeq Protein?

Seeq clear protein creates clear whey protein powders that are offered in a variety of fruity flavors and marketed as “the juicy side” of protein powders! Seeq products contain roughly 100 calories, 22 grams of protein from whey isolate, and 0 grams of sugar.

Seeq is currently offered in 6 different flavors: watermelon wave, blue razz freeze, strawberry lemonade, mango pineapple, fruit punch and grape. As you can see, these flavors are very different from the typical chocolate or vanilla whey protein options we are used to seeing on the shelves.

Some people are opting for a clear whey protein powder because of it’s lighter flavors and less creamy mouthfeel, more comparable to a juice or sports drink instead of a frothy smoothie or shake. Many find it easier to stomach and that it sits lighter throughout the day than the traditional creamy whey protein powders.

What is clear whey protein?

So what is clear whey protein? Clear whey protein is made through the acidification and purification of regular whey proteins, bringing the protein down to a pH of roughly 3.2 and resulting in a higher protein product with a slightly acidic flavor. This naturally acidic flavor opens the doors to introduce the fun, fresh flavors that you see on the Seeq website! Nobody wants acidic vanilla, but acidic mango pineapple works.

The good news? Both clear whey proteins, whey protein concentrates, and whey protein isolates are sources of high quality, complete proteins that can help you meet your goals! Whey protein isolates tend to be lower in calorie, higher in protein, and lower in lactose than concentrates do.

Seeq Protein Ingredients

Seeq protein products contain ingredients that are commonly found on protein powders lists like:

  • Whey protein isolate: Whey protein powders are generally a whey concentrate or a whey isolate. Seeq products have 22 grams of whey isolate, which is processed different than a whey concentrate resulting in a higher protein product with lower carbohydrate, lower fat, and generally a lower calorie content as well. With Seeq being a protein isolate, it is also a lactose free protein powder..

  • Natural and Artificial flavors: While natural and artificial flavors need to be proven to be safe to be used in food, these flavor additions could be a deal breaker for some people and would probably make this product not the one for you if you prefer no flavors.

  • Polysorbate 80 and/or sunflower lecithin: This is recognized as safe by the FDA and is used to make the protein powder more soluble and easily absorb into the liquid you mix it with.

  • Citric Acid: This can be used to add flavor, color, and stabilize the pH of a protein powder.

  • Color Agents: This varies by flavor but can include beet root extract, beta carotene, and spirulina powder.

  • Sweeteners: Seeq contains no added sugar, but it does contain Stevia and Sucralose (aka Splenda) as sweeteners. Which one is used will vary by flavor of Seeq powder you buy. Both of these sweeteners have been proven to be safe for consumption in moderate amounts, but some people report personal side effects.

  • Silicone- This is added as an anti-caking agent so that your protein powder stays clump free. It also helps with the foaming of the product which many customers enjoy from a protein powder.

While many of these ingredients are commonly found in protein powders, they may not be what you want to see on the label. There are many companies who create products with no flavors, no sweeteners, and no silicones and if you prefer that, then this brand likely will not be for you!

How does it taste?

Wondering if Seeq protein powder even tastes good? Well you’re in luck, because I ordered the sample pack to test it out for us! Of course, these opinions are just my own and you may come to a different conclusion.

Whey protein powder has always been my go to protein powder (this one is my favorite to make recipes like this banana date smoothie!) but I tend to gravitate towards the creamy whey protein options. The sample pack included the three following flavors that I simply mixed with water:

  1. Watermelon Wave: This one tastes exactly like a watermelon jolly rancher. Pretty good but very sweet and I think I would prefer this flavor served more as a slushy instead of with just water.

  2. Blue Razz Freeze: This was my least favorite of the three because I thought it tasted more artificial than the others despite all three having very sweet flavor profiles.

  3. Mango Pineapple: This was my favorite of the variety pack flavors and I thought most enjoyable when mixed with just water alone.

Other things that I noticed when using the Seeq protein powder:

  1. It froths alot! Definitely use a large enough shaker bottle because you will get about 3 inches of froth. The froth quickly dies down and you’re left with a thin, juice like texture.

  2. Light mouthfeel: The final mixed product was so light on the tongue that it almost messed with my mind a little bit haha how can a whey protein powder end up a smooth as a propel? Very different from other whey protein powder mouthfeels that are a bit thicker!

  3. Very good mix-ability: I thought this protein powder mixed really easily with water and left behind very few clumps. I also let them sit for a while after mixing and didn’t notice any significant separation.

  4. Tastes best when it’s chilled: I mixed all of the Seeq protein powders with room temperature water so that I could keep the water consistent but these protein drinks definitely taste best with chilled water or on ice!

  5. Incredibly sweet/can taste the sweeteners: We know that this protein powder contains artificial sweeteners along with natural and artificial flavors and I do think that you can taste (and smell) those come through with the fruity flavors of this product.

  6. I didn’t feel as full after drinking this protein drink: While other whey protein powders can feel more like a full snack or meal, I thought the Seeq protein drink sat much lighter after drinking it and is more comparable to drinking a sports drink instead of a smoothie.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the product and found it to be a fun spin on whey protein isolates. While the sweetness level makes it one that I would not consistently reach for, I was impressed with the lightness of the protein drink and the mix-ability of the product.

In addition, the unique fruity flavors allow for Seeq protein powders to be used to make a variety of recipes including slushees, lemonades, high protein jello, and more!

Seeq clear protein vs whey competitors:

From plant based to animal based to clear options, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed when selecting the best protein option for you! To keep this section concise, I simply compared Seeq to other whey options including clear whey protein, whey protein powder, and whey protein isolate.

This is by no means a comprehensive comparison and there are tons of brands whose products will vary in nutrition, ingredients, and price that could alter this section.

seeq vs competitors

Compared to its non-clear competitors, Seeq was slightly more expensive and had a lower protein content. However, Seeq also contains no added sugar and has 0 grams of lactose.

Many protein powders, especially whey protein powders, will be fairly similar in nutrition as you can see above. For most people, the biggest things to look for when trying to differentiate between products are price, lactose content, ingredients list, third party testing, etc.

Do I need to use protein powder to meet my protein goals?

For most people, no.

When it comes to protein powders, I think we can be very tempted to use them at every meal in place of foods, epescially when you see fitness influencers sprinkle protein powder into everything they eat.

I always recommend that you use protein powders the way that you would use other supplements… as a supplement in the diet to fill any potential nutrient gaps. While protein has many important functions in the body like muscle growth, healing, and immunity, too much protein can also be harmful.

You can reach your protein goals with food alone by incorporating protein containing foods consistently in your diet. Protein powders are a convenient option to reach for to boost your protein intake but they are not a required part of a healthy diet.

Individuals who have very high protein needs (whether from training, disease, or other factors), very low appetites, or who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet that may fall short are protein are people who may need a protein powder.

Pro’s and Con’s:

Products like Seeq protein powder have a list of pro’s and con’s that come with it. This list includes some important points that I see as a dietitian but of course, this is my perspective and you should consider these points in the context of your own diet and nutritional needs.

Pros:

  1. Lighter mouthfeel and fruity flavors: This is a huge pro and a different take on protein powders. If you want something that tastes more similar to a flavored water or sports drink, I would try out Seeq protein powder! I found it to taste less “syrup” like than other sports beverages.

  2. High quality, complete protein: I recommend whey protein powders for a variety of reasons but especially because they are a source of complete, high quality protein. This means that the protein contains all of the essential amino acids that your body needs to get from the diet. You also get a good dose of branched chain amino acids as well. Seeq has 22 grams of protein and 4.5 grams of BCAA’s.

  3. Lactose free & sugar free: This is a good lactose free protein powder to reach for. While this product does contain sweeteners, it is also sugar free.

  4. Free of some common allergens: Seeq contains no gluten and no soy.

  5. Convenient: Protein powders can be a convenient and quick way to boost your protein intake. When I have clients who are on the go or regularly find themselves snacking on carb only snacks, I will recommend protein foods and protein powders to fill that gap.

  6. Can help you meet your protein goals: When paired with a balanced diet, protein powders are a lower calorie, concentrated way to meet your protein goals throughout the day.

Cons:

  1. Not third party tested: At the time that this review was written, there is no third party testing done on Seeq and this is actually the biggest con for me. Supplements, like protein powders, are not regulated by the FDA so many go through third party testing to help ensure safety.

Seeq is transparent that their products are made in a GMP compliant facility and go through a 5-7 day testing period for no banned substances but this product is currently not third party tested and many other protein powders are.

While it’s likely safe, I would NOT recommend this product to pregnant women as it stands currently and would recommend another that has been third party tested.

  2. Contains dairy: This is a whey protein powder meaning it contains dairy and would not be a good fit for those who have a dairy allergy or follow a dairy free diet.

  3. Contains artificial flavors, natural flavors, and sweeteners: There are many people who do not want these ingredients in their protein powders. While these ingredients are safe and therefore not a deal breaker for me personally, this could be a deal breaker for others.

  4. Cost: Seeq was more expensive than other whey protein isolates and also had a slightly lower protein content than other options. If you want more bang for your buck or want to stretch your dollar, this is not the product I would buy.

  5. Just a protein… and that’s all: This isn’t a fault of the product itself but a reality of protein powders in general. Remember that this product is a protein isolate featuring almost exclusively protein and should be used as a supplement within a balanced diet.

The Takeaway:

Protein powder is convenient but it functions on as protein in the diet whereas food can contain tons of other health promoting nutrients (like fiber). With this, I like to see the diet consist of balanced meals and then use protein powder in a pinch or to help you reach those final few grams of protein you need.

While I don’t think it’s the best protein powder in the market, I do think Seeq could be a good product to incorporate into a balanced and healthy lifestyle that support muscle growth due to it’s high quality protein content (when coupled with resistance training, of course.)

The main con’s for me with this product are the slightly higher price tag, no third party testing, and that it contains ingredients that some people don’t want in their protein powders. As stated earlier, I would not recommend this product to pregnant women because of it’s lack of third party testing.

However, Seeq is a source of high quality protein that could be a convenient option to help you meet your protein goals with a light and fresh flavor that you may enjoy.
