Recipe modification suggestions

This cinnamon brown sugar oatmeal is great as it is but can also be adjusted to better match your own flavor preferences. Here are a few of my suggestions:

  • Add a fruit toppings: banana or raspberries would be a great fruit to choose.

  • Add some nuts: Chopped walnuts or slivered almonds would pair perfectly.

  • Stir in an egg: if you want to increase the protein content and enhance the creamy texture, whisk an egg and add it to your oats as they cook.

  • Top with greek yogurt: vanilla greek yogurt would taste delicious on this bowl.

  • Make it as overnight oats: yes, this recipe can be mixed together in a large bowl and added to your favorite overnight oat bowls to be enjoyed in the morning.

Ingredients:

I hate it when you find a recipe that you want to try, only to discover that you need to basically go on an easter egg hunt to track down some of the ingredients. Not the case with this recipe! The best part about this cinnamon brown sugar oatmeal is that your probably already have the ingredients in your pantry:

  1. Old Fashioned Oats: I tend to cook with old fashioned oats but you can use whichever oatmeal you have on hand and adjust the cooking time to package instructions.

  2. Milk: If you want to make creamy oatmeal, you need to use milk instead of water. Not only does milk increase the protein content, but the fat content enhances the creaminess! I have a toddler so I typically use whole milk but you can use your own personal favorite.

  3. Cinnamon: Obviously a must have in brown sugar cinnamon oatmeal.

  4. Brown Sugar: I used light brown sugar.

  5. Vanilla Extract: This adds such a nice depth of flavor to the oatmeal itself.

  6. Salt: Add a pinch of salt to balance out all the sweet flavors of this oatmeal.

Recipe FAQ:

  1. Can this brown sugar cinnamon oatmeal be made as overnight oats?

    1. Yes! Simply mix all of the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl and distribute evenly between 3 overnight oat containers. Your overnight oats will stay good in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

  2. How long will this oatmeal stay good for?

    1. Have leftover oatmeal from your morning? You can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

  3. How to reheat oatmeal?

    1. I recommend adding a splash of milk and warming this oatmeal up in the microwave for minute or slowly on the stovetop (about 5 minutes) stirring often. As the oats cool in the refrigerator, they harden and adding a splash of milk will help thin the oatmeal out and give it back its creamy texture.
