Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse
This high protein chocolate mousse is rich in decadent chocolate, light and fluffy in texture, and loaded with 15 grams of creamy cottage cheese protein making it a deliciously satisfying sweet tooth snack!
As a dietitian, I love to see people putting enough protein on their plate. We know that protein is essential for muscle growth and maintenance, supports our immunity, enhances meal satisfaction, and more!
While protein is a goal for meals and snacks, I generally don’t push that every dessert needs to be a “high protein dessert,” especially if you are sacrificing the overall flavor and enjoyment in order to hit your protein goals.
But what if I could find you a high protein dessert that ACTUALLY tastes delicious? Good news, because I have just the one.
This high protein chocolate mousse is full of decadent chocolate and its rich and creamy texture will make it hard for you to believe that it’s actually made from whipped cottage cheese. With high protein dessert this delicious, you can bring on the sweet tooth any time you want!

Ingredients:
Cottage cheese: I used whole milk cottage cheese but you could lower the overall calorie content by option for low-fat.
Unsweetened cacao powder: I used 2 tablespoons but you can add more or less depending on how deep of a chocolate flavor you would like.
Powdered sugar: This helps give our mousse the light and fluffy texture we want in a mousse.
Vanilla extract: For flavor depth.
Splash of milk: This helps with blending and also lightens up the texture.
Optional (but recommended) brown sugar or maple syrup: To sweeten up your mousse because remember, we should enjoy this protein dessert as well!
The process:
This cottage cheese mousse truly could not be easier to make. All you need to do is:
Add all of your ingredients to a blender or blender cup and pulse until the ingredients begin to combing. You may need to shake your blender a few times to keep the ingredients near the blade.
Continue to blend until your mousse is creamy and fluffy. Garnish, serve and enjoy!
LTN Tip: part of what makes cottage cheese chocolate mousse delicious is what you pair it with. I like to top this recipe with some chopped chocolate pieces, creamy whipped cream or vanilla greek yogurt, and then add fresh berries like raspberries for a well rounded bite!
Swaps and Substitutions:
Make this mousse your own by:
Changing up your toppings: great toppings for a chocolate mousse include:
Fruit like strawberries, raspberries, pomegranates, or sliced bananas.
Whipped cream, cool whip, or greek yogurt
Chocolate chips
Crushed oreo cookies or chocolate chip cookes
And more!
Customizing the sweetness: As written, this recipe includes both powdered sugar and a sprinkle of another sweetener like maple syrup or brown sugar. I recommend keeping at least one tablespoon of the powdered sugar for texture, but you can change up the other sweeteners depending on your flavor preferences.
Opting for more or less chocolate: You have full control over how much cacao powder you add. I chose an equal amount of cacao powder to powdered sugar but you can add one tablespoon less or a bit more depending on how strong you like the chocolate flavor.
Recipe FAQ:
How to store this recipe?
To store this high protein chocolate mousse, place your leftovers in an air tight container and refrigerate for 3-4 days.
What if I can’t get the right texture?
First, make sure you continue to place the ingredients near the blades of your blender. You may need to shake the blender or scrape the sides of it a few times until the ingredients begin to combine. If your mousse is too thick, add one more tablespoon of milk and blend!
Do I have to use cottage cheese?
This recipe can also be made with greek yogurt but it will have a tangier flavor profile! Cottage cheese has a much more mild flavor which makes it a great ingredient for desserts.
