Blueberry Raspberry Smoothie
This blueberry raspberry smoothie is quick and easy, filled with fruits and vegetables, and loaded with greek yogurt protein making it the perfect smoothie for the entire family!
As a registered dietitian and avid healthy eater (most of the time lol), I’m constantly looking for ways to get more fruits and vegetables on me and my families plates.
While a salad is one good strategy, I sometimes hear that people view half a plate of fruits and vegetables as intimidating, near impossible to finish! And if an adult is struggling… you already know your toddler is less than likely to even TOUCH the color portion of the plate.
Two recommendations that I have for easy ways to get more color into your diet is to 1) mix the color into your carbs and 2) blend the color into a smoothie like this fruit and veggie loaded blueberry and raspberry smoothie.
This smoothie is loaded with two different types of fruit, veggies, and probiotic and protein containing yogurt and milk. It’s the perfect smoothie for your entire family and an easy way to get more color into your day!
How to build a better and more balanced smoothie:
Before we get into this raspberry and blueberry smoothie, we need to talk about a few smoothie guidelines that I have to build better and balanced smoothies.
First, you DO NOT have to use protein powder to add protein to a smoothie. Todays recipe is a greek yogurt smoothie and gets its protein all from greek yogurt and milk. Beyond that, there are tons of other ingredients that you can add to boost the protein content. Check out this blog for ideas:
Second, you have full control over the consistency of your smoothie! While some people prefer straw sipping smoothies, others (including myself) like a spoon worthy and creamy smoothie. If that’s you, I have an entire blog written on how to make a creamy smoothie that you can read here:
Other than that, smoothies are pretty foolproof way to get more color into your diet. Now let’s get back to todays berry smoothie and talk about all the reasons why you should make it!
Why you’ll love this recipe:
This raspberry blueberry smoothie has quickly become one of our family favorites and I think it will become one of yours too because it’s:
Made without protein powder: While of course you CAN add protein powder to the recipe as written, this smoothie is loaded with natural protein containing foods like greek yogurt and milk.
Family and toddler friendly: I think it’s a well known fact that toddlers LOVE berries which leaves me feeling confident that they will love this berry smoothie as well. Also, with a slightly lower protein content this recipe is perfect for little kids and toddlers!
Can be turned into popsicles: Have leftovers? This recipe freezes great and can easily be turned into fiber filled greek yogurt fruit popsicles! I would recommend pouring it into popsicle molds like these ones which are the perfect size for toddlers.
High fiber smoothie: Berries are some of the highest fiber fruits that you can consume because of the little seeds that you get in each bite. This gives this smoothie a nice fiber boost that is gut healthy and filling!
Loaded with fruits and vegetables: Blueberries, raspberries, and riced cauliflower all blended up into an easy to enjoy, delicious smoothie that is secretly loaded with nutrients, antioxidants, and protein.
You’re going to love this smoothie, it’s so simple and easy. Now let’s get into how to make it:
Ingredients:
Now, let’s get to what you’ll need to build up this high fiber, raspberry and blueberry smoothie!
Frozen blueberries- Or fresh.
Frozen raspberries- Or fresh.
Frozen riced cauliflower- In my opinion, this is the best vegetable to add to smoothies of all kinds. It’s flavorless, blends easily, and adds an easy boost of nutrients and volume to your smoothie! I buy the fresh riced cauliflower and then freeze it myself.
Vanilla greek yogurt- Really any flavor of yogurt will work in this recipe but I think vanilla yogurt makes it extra creamy. Be sure to choose greek yogurt for the higher protein!
Milk- Or liquid of choice. I recommend milk or kefir for extra creaminess and protein but you could also use orange juice or even water if you’re making this for kids and want to keep the protein lower.
Lemon zest- optional but HIGHLY recommended. Lemon zest really enhances the fresh flavor of berries and I think you’ll love the zesty flavor addition.
Honey- just a dash for some extra sweetness.
LTN TIP: When it comes to building delicious smoothies, I highly recommend using frozen fruit instead of adding ice to avoid watering your smoothie down too much. If you prefer a thinner smoothie, I would add more liquid (like milk) or opt for fresh fruit instead of frozen.
Step by Step Instructions:
One of the reasons why I like smoothies so much is because they are as easy to clean up as they are to make! With just a blender and a few ingredients, you’ll have this smoothie ready to enjoy in no time.
Here’s what you’ll need to do:
1) Zest your lemon then add all of your ingredients to a blender or blender cup.
2) Blend until smooth, adding liquid as needed until it reaches your preferred consistency. Serve in a glass and enjoy!
Swaps and substitutions:
There are so many ways to make this blueberry and raspberry smoothie exactly how you want it. Here are a few suggestions:
Add protein powder: As mentioned, this berry smoothie gets its protein from greek yogurt instead of protein powder. If you want the higher protein content, you can add a scoop of vanilla protein powder or even collagen powder to this recipe!
Use fresh fruit: I recommend using frozen fruit for a thicker and creamier smoothie but you can certainly use fresh fruit if you want to use it up or blend up a slightly thinner smoothie.
Add nutritious additions: chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp hearts, and other nutritious additions can easily be blended in to this recipe.
Blend in nut butters: peanut butter or almond butter would be delicious in this recipe.
Include other fruits: This is a very simple raspberry blueberry smoothie but that doesn’t mean you can’t make room for other fruits like bananas, pomegranate, or other berries!
There really are so many different ways that you can serve this recipe.
Recipe FAQ:
Can I meal prep this smoothie?
You can definitely add your frozen berries, frozen riced cauliflower, and lemon zest to ziplock bags and store them in the freezer. When you are ready to make your smoothie, simply add the contents of the ziplock to a blender and top with milk, yogurt, and honey if desired!
You said this smoothie can be made into a popsicle?
I absolutely did say that. Because it’s made without protein powder, this smoothie can easily be frozen into greek yogurt fruit popsicles and be enjoyed on a warm summer day or as a nutritious and delicious after school snack!
Do I have to use frozen fruit?
Nope! This recipe is also delicious using fresh blueberries and raspberries but I typically use frozen fruit for my smoothies because I find that ice tends to water a smoothie down and frozen fruit blends into a thicker and creamier smoothie.
